Today's Tip
Welcome back to Make It Happen Monday, your weekly dose of inspiration from the Healthy Living School!
I frequently receive questions about my Oura Ring, so today, I’m sharing the basics of what it does and why it has become a powerful health-enhancing tool for me.
Please note I have no affiliation or commercial relationship with Oura or any other product.
The Oura Ring is an example of what we call wearables—devices like smartwatches and fitness trackers designed to help us understand our bodies better. These tools measure key health metrics like sleep, physical activity, and stress levels, giving us real-time insights into our well-being.
What Does the Oura Ring Track?
The Oura Ring focuses on four key areas:
- Sleep – It tracks your sleep stages, from deep sleep to REM, helping you understand both the quantity and quality of your rest.
- Activity – It monitors your daily movement, encouraging you to stay active and hit your fitness goals.
- Stress & Recovery – It calculates a Readiness Score, which assesses how well your body is recovering and whether you should rest or push harder on any given day.
- Heart Rate Variability (HRV) – My favorite feature! The Oura Ring continuously measures HRV, providing insight into whether your body is in a restorative or stressed state throughout the day.
A Game-Changer for My Health
One of the most important takeaways I’ve learned from using my Oura Ring is that small lifestyle adjustments make a big difference. Here are some key habits I’ve changed based on my wearable insights:
- Reduced alcohol intake – I never drink on weekdays and have significantly cut back overall because I can see how alcohol negatively impacts my sleep and recovery.
- Earlier meal timing – The data has reinforced the importance of finishing eating as early as possible in the evening to support better sleep.
- Optimized bedtime routine – Avoiding stimulating activities before bed has become non-negotiable.
- Mouth taping at night – A surprising yet effective strategy to improve sleep quality and oxygen intake.
- Consistent morning breathing and meditation practice – Seeing how these practices positively impact my stress levels has solidified them as daily habits.
Wearables: A Tool for Awareness, Not Perfection
The key to using wearables effectively is understanding that they are feedback tools, not scorecards for perfection. They provide insights that help you make sustainable, positive lifestyle changes—not just quick fixes.
Maybe your data reveals that you need more deep sleep, or perhaps you notice you’re not moving enough during the day—these small insights can guide you toward healthier habits.
Your Personal Health Coach
Whether you use an Oura Ring, a smartwatch, or another wearable device, think of it as your personal health coach—helping you make smarter decisions for your long-term well-being.
