The Movement for Safer Foods: Why We Must Demand Change
Welcome back to Make It Happen Monday, your weekly dose of insight and action from the Healthy Living School!
Today, I want to highlight a critical movement that’s gaining significant momentum—one that directly impacts the health of our families, especially our children.
If you follow the Food Babe on Instagram (which I highly recommend), you may have seen her dedicated efforts to pressure Kellogg’s to remove artificial food dyes from the cereals they sell here in the United States.
This is a movement we should all support, and here’s why.
The Harmful Impact of Artificial Food Dyes
The data is undeniable: artificial food dyes, such as Red 40 and Yellow 5, have been linked to negative effects on children’s behavior.
Research has shown that these dyes contribute to hyperactivity, attention issues, and other behavioral challenges. In fact, many parents who have removed food dyes from their children’s diets report noticeable improvements in focus, mood, and overall well-being.
A Double Standard That Needs to End
What makes this issue even more infuriating is that Kellogg’s already produces the same cereals with natural, dye-free formulations for the European Union and Canada. Why? Because those regions have stricter regulations and demand safer ingredients. Yet, here in the United States—where these companies are headquartered—they continue to use these harmful dyes.
This double standard prioritizes profits over public health, and it’s unacceptable.
The Power of Consumer Action
The good news is that we have the power to drive change. As consumers, we can make a difference by using our voices—and our purchasing power. The simplest and most effective action we can take is to stop buying Kellogg’s cereals until they commit to removing artificial dyes from their U.S. products. If enough of us take a stand, these companies will have no choice but to listen.
Beyond Cereal: A Demand for Safer Food
This movement isn’t just about breakfast cereals—it’s about demanding better, safer food options for everyone. We must continue to push for transparency and higher food standards across the board. The more awareness we create and the more we support initiatives that prioritize health over harmful additives, the closer we get to a future where food companies put consumers first.
Let’s keep this conversation going! Forward this message, educate others, and make your voice heard. Together, we can ensure that companies like Kellogg’s stop putting profits over people’s health.
Thank you for being part of this important movement. See you next week for another Make It Happen Monday!
